Sustainable W-E-F Nexus Working Group

Rabi Mohtar

Member of the Scientific Steering Committee and Co-Chair of the Sustainable W-E-F Nexus Working Group

Professor Mohtar leads the W-E-F Nexus Research Group and the W-E-F Nexus Initiative at Texas A&M University. His research addresses global resource challenges: developing the Water-Energy-Food Nexus framework linking science to policy, characterising soil-water medium using thermodynamic modelling, non-traditional water applications for sustainable integrated water management.

Water Future Is Important To Me Because…

Water Future is important to me because it works toward achieving water, energy and food security; harmonising humans and nature; and feasible implementation of integrated mechanisms into a holistic, system level platform.

Lars Ribbe

Co-Chair of the Sustainable W-E-F Nexus Working Group and Member of the SDG Assessment Core Group

Lars Ribbe is a professor for integrated land and water resources management and director of the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT), TH Köln (University of Applied Sciences) since 2009. His work areas include river basin assessment, modelling and management and he is specifically interested in developing knowledge systems which help decision makers to cope with prevailing water resources related challenges like water scarcity and drought, water use efficiency and water allocation. Recently he has been involved in bridging scientific and sectoral approaches in the context of the water, energy and food security Nexus by forming an interdisciplinary group on that matter at TH Köln.

After obtaining degrees in Chemistry (University of Bremen) and Master of Engineering (Cologne University of Applied Sciences) he received his PhD (Dr.rer.nat) in the field of Hydro-informatics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany. At ITT he is coordinating international master programs with relation to water and environmental sciences together with Jordan University, Vietnam Academy of Applied Sciences and the Autonomous University San Luis Potosi, Mexico as part of an international university network involving over 15 universities from around the globe. Furthermore, his current research is related to a systematic analysis of river basins with the aim to provide water governance support in Vietnam, Jordan, Chile, Brazil and the Nile Basin.

Water Future Is Important To Me Because…

Water future is important for me because we need a strong and functional global network of expertise in order to solve problems at the local level.

He is professional in the field of integrated water resources management, natural disaster risk management and mitigation (flood and drought), irrigation system modernization and international cooperation and training. Currently, he is in charge of researching and implementing the tasks related to the fields as mentioned above for the whole of Vietnam and focused in the Red river delta in the North and Central and High Land.

Water Future Is Important To Me Because…

Water Future is important to me because I found that water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself. It is vital for reducing the global burden of disease and improving the health, welfare and productivity of populations. It is central to the production and preservation of a host of benefits and services for people. Water is also at the heart of adaptation to climate change, serving as the crucial link between the climate system, human society and the environment.
